Fashion In Your 50's & Beyond

Fashion In Your 50's & Beyond

Most women my age want to find a style that reflects how young they feel versus their actual age. Gravity can be unkind and relentless. We, as women, need to embrace the body we have, not the body we want or think we have. I truly appreciate the beauty of every human on Earth. We are our own worst critics, and I speak from experience so let’s get out there and be beautiful ladies! Throw out those sweatpants and t-shirts and put some real effort into your style! Here are some quick tips we could all use.

1. Select figure-flattering clothes that celebrate and work well with your body type.

2. And please have your clothing tailored to fit you. So many people will spend $1000 on a beautiful blazer, but won’t spend the $25 to have it altered to fit perfectly.

3. Start your wardrobe evaluation with your undergarments. I recently had my breast implants removed and I think I waited a year or two to actually go buy new bras that fit me. MAKE TIME to go buy a new bra, and seriously buy new panties. Your romantic partner will thank you!

4. When dressing up for an event, pop neutral colors with unexpected bright accessories.

5. Invest in a classic designer bag that won’t go out of style. When we were young, we couldn’t afford to splurge so go crazy. A great handbag can add instant sophistication to your look.

6. Prioritize timeless style options over fleeting clothing trends.

7. Don’t wear overly casual clothes. Covid took fashion down a road that may be hard to come back from for some. When I go into my closet to decide on what to wear, I dress for the day I want to have. Take some time and really put some effort and thought into your style.

8. Very important, Invest in a flattering black dress. The perfect black dress is by far the smartest style investment a woman can make.

9. Choose clothing that inspires you. As we age, its easy to get into a rut on our style choices. Figure out what you like to wear and what makes you feel confident. If it doesn't bring you joy, don't wear it.

10. Clean out your closet. Get rid of anything you haven’t worn in 12 months. Donate it or take it to a consignment store. Better yet, bring your well-loved designer pieces to me, let's sell them and use the money you make to update your wardrobe. Take a page from Marie Kondo’s book and if it doesn’t bring you joy, toss it.

11. Invest in the basics, they will be with you for the rest of your life. Here's where The Row excels. I used to think $300 was too expensive for a t-shirt but I've come to realize quality is always better than quantity when it comes to style and especially to the basic closet staples.

12. Don’t wait for a special occasion, wear your favorite pieces now. If you come across a great deal on a vintage Valentino, buy it! Then make a point to wear it out somewhere fun and exciting! Makes life much more interesting.

13. Accessories can change everything. Add a belt, a scarf or a fun necklace and watch your outfit come to life.

XO,

Kristen
